Side tables that slide beside a sofa

A side table beside a sofa should meet the hand where it naturally reaches. For a slide-under design, the space beneath the sofa is just as important as the height of the tabletop.

Measure above and below the arm

Record the sofa arm height and the available gap beneath the frame at the intended position. A C-shaped base may be blocked by a low crossbar even when the sofa's visible legs look tall enough. Include rugs in the clearance measurement. Compare the base thickness and how far it must slide under the sofa to bring the tabletop into a useful position.

Check the table's full depth when it is in use. A top that reaches comfortably over the cushion can also intrude into the space needed to stand up. Try a paper outline while sitting normally, then get up and walk past. If you need to move the table before every change of position, decide whether that inconvenience is acceptable for the task it will serve.

A conventional table with four legs may fit better beside a wide sofa arm than a sliding design. Round tops can reduce projecting corners, while rectangular tops can use a narrow gap more fully. Neither form should be chosen solely by its outline: feet, braces and handles can extend beyond the visible surface and affect the actual walking route.

Choose the surface for its contents

Lay out the objects that will regularly sit on the table, such as a lamp, remote and drink. A laptop requires a different amount of space and should only be used on a surface suitable for it, with its ventilation requirements respected. Do not treat a small side table as a seat or lean heavily on an overhanging edge. Follow the stated load and intended use.

Read the finish's care instructions, especially if hot cups or water glasses are part of the plan. A coaster should fit without leaving the drink balanced near the edge. Check whether a tray top is removable and how it is secured during use. A decorative lip may contain small objects but can also make wiping crumbs into a cloth less straightforward.

For a table that will move often, compare weight, grip points and floor compatibility. Lift or move it as the manufacturer directs rather than dragging it by the top. A useful side table can be positioned, cleaned around and returned without disturbing the rest of the seating arrangement.
