Salad spinners and storage space

A salad spinner occupies cupboard space as a complete bowl, basket and lid. Before buying one, compare the amount of leaves you prepare with the space needed to operate, wash and store all three parts.

Capacity should match an ordinary meal

Look at the usable basket rather than the outside bowl alone. A very large spinner may be convenient for a crowd but cumbersome for a small daily salad. A small one can require several batches, which may be acceptable if storage is tight. Choose according to the quantities actually prepared most often instead of the largest occasional gathering.

Check the working space around the lid. Pull-cord, pump and crank mechanisms need different hand movements. The bowl should sit on a suitable stable surface, and any braking control should be clearly described. Follow the maker's loading and operating instructions rather than increasing speed or force to compensate for an overfilled basket.

Cleaning the lid matters

The basket is easy to see, but the lid may contain less accessible channels and moving parts. Check whether it separates for cleaning and how it is put back together. Do not dismantle a mechanism that is not intended for user removal. Read dishwasher guidance for each component, because a bowl and a mechanical lid may have different restrictions.

Inspect the basket openings and the area where it meets the bowl. Leaves or small fragments can remain there after use. Clean according to the instructions and allow the parts to dry before closing them together. A spinner should not become a sealed storage place for residual wash water simply because its lid fits neatly on top.

Consider whether the bowl earns another role

Some products describe the outer bowl as suitable for serving or storage. Confirm that use in the maker's information rather than assuming every spinner bowl is designed for it. A useful second role can reduce the number of separate bowls in a cupboard, but only if the basket and lid have somewhere convenient to wait while the bowl is occupied.

Measure the stored height with the lid in its intended position. Check whether the handle retracts and whether the complete spinner can be lifted out without moving several other items. Keep replaceable parts identifiable where available. A simpler mechanism that cleans and stores easily may be more useful than a feature-heavy model whose lid takes up a whole extra shelf.
